Brittney Hanvey: Hustling Work from Home Mom and Business Owner

Brittney Hanvey is the hustling work from home mom and owner of Haizel Creations Film and Photography. After discovering the Digital Media field in college, Brittney jumped in with both feet, absorbing all that she could about coding, film, animation, and photography. Her business was born shortly after the arrival of her first child. She documented her daughter passionately, so much so that others began inquiring about her services! Brittney seized the opportunity to stay home with her daughter, learn new skills, and start her own company.

What was your first job growing up, and what did you learn from it?

I was a waitress from age 16 until 25, and I learned so much about customer service!

Tell us about your career path before starting your company, and how it got you to where you are today:

I went to college originally to be a Nurse - boy did that turn around! That first year was brutal. I felt so lost. Growing up, I always liked creative film classes, but I never saw it as a potential career path. After taking multiple “what do you want to be when you grow up?” tests, I discovered Digital Media.

Digital Media was a broad field, but it covered so much rad stuff! From making my website straight from code to animating my own video game to the basics of photography. I dove into exploring the areas I loved! I ended up graduating with a Bachelor degree in Digital Media with an Emphasis in Film. During my last year of college, I traveled to Israel to help film a documentary – talk about a killer experience!

Tell us the story of why and how you started your business:

I was a waitress all the way up until a week before delivering my first baby. After becoming a mother, I couldn’t fathom leaving my daughter. The instant love for your child is powerful and deep for a new mama. I picked up my camera and filmed every waking moment with that little lady. I started posting things on Facebook, and everyone responded with such enthusiasm.

From there, I started getting requests to film other people’s kids and families. I thought, hmmm I could make some money doing this! Soon after, people assumed I could take pictures too. My answer? Oh no no no! I took ONE class in college, but challenge accepted. I worked my butt off teaching myself how to photograph and finding people who inspired me to be my mentors. Soon after, Haizel Creations was born. Haizel is what I originally wanted to name my daughter, who is the reason my business is here today.

What is a typical day like for you?

I normally start the morning answering emails. Then my kids wake up - I am a stay at home working/hustling mama. I run my daughter to school, get my son down for a nap, and then I typically have two hours to work. Next, I get my daughter and am a mom for the rest of the day. By ten in the evening, when everyone is asleep including my husband, I stay up until one, sometimes two, to make deadlines.

Tell us about a hard time in your life. What did you learn from it or how did it make you stronger?

I would say the hardest adjustment has been being a stay at home working mom. It’s not easy by any means, and there are days when I’m tempted to give up my passion. When I look at my kids, though, I think about how I want them to see their mom working her butt off and balancing many roles. I want them to love things hard, and crave a life filled with drive and passion!

What advice or tips would you give to a new business owner?

Things will come slow and steady; always keep plugging away even if times are sluggish. Offer mini sessions or giveaways or shoot something fun for yourself. Keep your creative brain working!

What’s next for your business? What are some of your short-term or long-term goals?

I would love to buckle down and teach more workshops, and eventually lead retreats.

Tell us about your life outside of your business. What do you like to do?

Outside of work, my family likes to go on adventures with our pet goats. Yep, I said goats. My daughter and I are allergic to dogs, so what better replacement than goats? Our goats are so cute and naughty!

How do you balance your career and family/personal life?

Ha, balance! Is this even a real thing? I’m mostly just hanging on for dear life, doing whatever I can each day.
